Interviewed: July 2010

In 2002, Sarah James and two other Gwich’in leaders were awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for their efforts in protecting their community as well as the Porcupine Caribou Herd from oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Today, Sarah and the Gwich’in nation continue to work together toward a permanent protection of the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the birthing and nursing ground of the Porcupine Caribou Herd. “A long time ago, our creator put Gwich’in people and the caribou on this land. The caribou has provided us everything we need to survive. We have taken a responsibility to protect the land and the caribou. It is our birthright to protect this land,” said Sarah.
